Title: Claude Moves Into Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides — the AI Office War Goes Inside Your Files
October 7, 2026
Anthropic announced on October 6 that Claude for Google Workspace is now in public beta for all paid Claude plans, installable through the Google Workspace Marketplace. Once installed, a Claude sidebar appears inside Docs, Sheets, and Slides — one installation covers all three apps. Claude can read the open document, see selected text, cells, or slides, and make changes directly in the file, eliminating the constant switching between browser tabs and chat windows.
The per-app capabilities differ. In Docs, Claude fixes sentences, restyles headings without breaking formatting, and routes larger rewrites through suggestion cards in the sidebar that users accept or dismiss one by one. In Sheets, it writes formulas, generates pivot tables and native charts, adds tabs, and can push a selected range through Python for data cleaning or dataset joins before writing results back into the spreadsheet. In Slides, it builds new slides using the deck's existing layouts and themes, then flags overlapping elements, content running off the slide, and hard-to-read text.
Beyond the sidebar add-on, Anthropic released beta connectors for Docs, Sheets, and Slides: paste a file link into a Claude conversation and Claude can create or edit Google files directly, respecting existing Google sharing permissions. Enterprise controls carry over — the Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys, and OpenTelemetry audit export all apply to the add-on, giving IT administrators full visibility into AI-assisted workflows.
Permissions are the centerpiece of this release. The default "Ask before edits" mode presents every change as an approval card and waits for confirmation; an "Accept all edits" mode lets Claude work through a task without stopping. But in either mode, sensitive actions — inserting an image from a web address, adding a link, removing someone's access — trigger a "Security review" pause with no option to always allow. Anthropic also drew hard lines: Claude cannot share the file, grant access, change ownership, create menus or scheduled automations, or load arbitrary web pages — those requests are refused outright.
Gemini has lived natively inside Workspace all along, and that is Google's real moat — beyond model quality, "the AI lives in your files" is what matters. Claude is now opening a store inside the rival's mall: Anthropic launched its own Claude Docs and Slides suite in September, and in October it plugged directly into Google's ecosystem. The Verge and VentureBeat frame it as a challenge to the OpenAI–Microsoft hold on enterprise AI productivity. The beta starts with the $20/month Pro tier; Team and Enterprise plans need an admin to enable the connectors first. The question for the next phase: will users switch allegiances for the AI they're already used to?
