Title: Jaguar Unveils Type 01, Its Most Powerful Production Car Ever — a £130,000 EV Bet on Young American Buyers
October 7, 2026
Jaguar revealed the Type 01 in New York on Tuesday, its first production model under an all-electric strategy and, by the company's own account, the most powerful road car in the 90-year-old brand's history. The four-door GT starts at £130,000 and goes on order in early 2027. Production is set for Solihull in the UK, with battery and electric-drive components sourced from Wolverhampton. Australian pricing is reported from $300,000 before on-road costs.
The Type 01 uses a tri-motor all-wheel-drive system producing up to 1,016 bhp and 1,365 Nm of torque, launching from standstill to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 150 mph. According to MotorTrend, the two rear motors are made by American supplier Dana to Jaguar's specifications, while the front motor was developed in-house by JLR. Cruising at steady speed, the rear inverter can disengage so a single efficient front motor does the work — then instantly re-engages when the driver demands power. A 118 kWh usable battery on an 850-volt architecture delivers an estimated 644 km of range on the US EPA cycle, and 350 kW DC fast charging adds 322 km in about 13 minutes.
The production evolution of the polarizing Type 00 concept, the Type 01 follows Jaguar's "Exuberant Modernism" design language: 5,235 mm long, 1,403 mm tall, and a drag coefficient of 0.23, the lowest of any Jaguar ever. Most radically, there is no rear windscreen — a camera-based rear-view display takes its place. Details include 17,000-pixel HD LED headlights, flush door handles that deploy through 4 mm of ice, a deployable spoiler, and a central spine running the cabin's length dividing four individual seats. The driver faces a 24-inch OLED display. Jaguar filed 360 new patents for the car.
The Guardian reports the Type 01 is explicitly aimed at younger American buyers — large-format ads ran in Times Square, DUMBO, and the Lower East Side through launch week, and actor Florence Pugh has reportedly been unveiled as brand ambassador. Ironically, the 5.24-meter car is too long for a standard UK parking space, an awkward fit for its home market. That mismatch is deliberate: Jaguar is abandoning volume for a smaller, pricier, younger ultra-luxury niche, positioning directly against Bentley, Rolls-Royce, and Porsche's electric performance lines.
The name carries the strategy: "Type" nods to Jaguar's heritage, "0" stands for zero emissions, and "1" marks the first car of a new generation. The Type 01 is the payoff of the divisive 2024 rebrand that drew broad criticism and was followed by a sharp sales decline in 2025. Managing director Rawdon Glover called the launch "one of the most significant moments in Jaguar's 90-plus year history." The Autopian, after a track ride in a prototype, concluded the styling can be debated but "the extraordinary engineering underneath it" is hard to deny. Whether the Type 01 can pull Jaguar out of its slump will come down to order books and deliveries.
