Bose's flagship Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar, launched this May at $1,099, is getting a fresh round of reviews — and the verdict is that you may not need the subwoofer after all. Engadget just scored it 8.6 out of 10, calling it a home theater option that stands on its own.
Bose markets the Lifestyle Ultra as its "loudest, deepest and most immersive" single-bar product. It's a 5.1.2-channel bar with upward-firing drivers that bounce sound off the ceiling to simulate Dolby Atmos overhead effects. It supports Dolby Atmos and LPCM audio, and comes in black or white.
The surprise across reviews is the low end. Bose's CleanBass technology paired with its QuietPort acoustic design delivers bass that reviewers didn't expect from a standalone bar. Engadget's reviewer connected it and immediately realized no subwoofer was needed; Gizmodo found the low rumble in action and horror scenes far more visceral than usual. That said, reviewers agree that true room-shaking theater bass still requires the $899 Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer, sold separately.
For households, dialogue you can't hear is a more common annoyance than weak bass. Ecoustics praised the bar's "excellent" dialogue clarity, and Bose's SpeechClarity feature proved genuinely useful for older shows not mixed for surround sound. The consensus: movies and TV are where this product earns the Ultra name.
The drawbacks are consistent too. There is a single HDMI port (eARC), no video pass-through, and no aux input. TrustedReviews also couldn't get the CustomTune auto-calibration working at all. And there's no DTS support, which matters if you still spin Blu-ray discs.
The $1,099 bar is only the entry point. Add the $899 subwoofer and a pair of rear surround speakers and the system easily tops $2,000. Gizmodo called that "not ideal for most people," and the steep expansion cost was one of Engadget's main deductions.
The $1,000 immersive-soundbar tier is brutally competitive. TrustedReviews lists the Sonos Arc Ultra, Marshall Heston 120, Sennheiser Ambeo Plus, Sony Theatre Bar 8, and Samsung HW-Q950H as direct alternatives. Still, the outlet concluded this is the best Bose soundbar it has ever tested.
For families who want better movie nights without running speaker wire through the living room, it's a low-friction upgrade — but if you already plan to buy a subwoofer, or you need more inputs, waiting for the holiday sales may be the smarter move.
