Apple Drops Its AI Health Overhaul From iOS 27.2 Beta 4

Beta 4 restores the old Health app

Apple's fourth iOS 27.2 developer beta, released on October 13, no longer ships the redesigned Health app that had appeared in the three previous builds. Installing beta 4 brings the old interface back: the new Longevity tab is replaced by the familiar Sharing tab, and the Insights tab, the Health Age metric and lab scheduling through Quest Diagnostics all disappear with it. 9to5Mac was first to notice; AppleInsider, MacRumors, The Apple Post and Stuff.tv confirmed the same change hours later. The build also swaps the Apple Music icon for a black-and-white version, whose fate is no more settled.

Apple's line: the redesign still ships this year

None of this is a reversal, Apple says. The company's developer notes from the first iOS 27.2 beta on September 16 already stated that the Health app was being tested in the beta cycle but would not be part of the iOS 27.2 release, launching later in the year instead — a position Apple reiterated to MacRumors. Beta 4's release notes promise that health data added during testing will be retained and viewable in the Settings app, and that the rollout "is still planned for this year." Users who upgrade now see a popup saying the new features will arrive in a future software update.

What the pulled app actually contained

Unveiled at Apple's September iPhone event, the redesign was the biggest overhaul of the Health app in years, powered by Apple Intelligence. The app splits into Insights, which assembles vitals, sleep score, heart rate and activity rings into a summary that updates through the day and offers a single actionable step; Longevity, which tracks longitudinal data; and Browse. Longevity houses Health Age, an estimate built from VO2 max, sleep time, heart rate variability and resting heart rate that compares how your body is performing against your calendar age. It also offers camera-based movement assessments covering flexibility, strength and balance — 17 camera-driven workout tests in all, according to PCMag — using vision models on the iPhone plus heart-rate data from the Watch. In the US, the app could also order blood work through Quest Diagnostics: $119 for a package covering more than 50 biomarkers, with sample collection at roughly 2,000 locations.

Why the removal was expected all along

Beta testers were never going to keep it. Apple designed the Health revamp as a separate, later release from the start, so carrying it inside 27.2 betas created a mismatch between test builds and the software that actually ships. Pulling it clears the decks as the public release approaches — a deadline sharpened by the HomePod mini 2, which launches on October 30 running HomePod software 27.2 and therefore needs the update to land first. The early betas also never activated the personalized layer the redesign was built around: MacObserver flagged a September 16 developer note in which Apple logged that "personalized summaries may not generate as expected in the Insights tab." Stuff.tv and Archyde report this is the second time Apple has scaled back its Health plans, after February reports said the company had pulled back before the redesign was finally revealed at the June keynote for iOS 27.

Who waits, and roughly for how long

Apple says the redesigned experience will begin rolling out later in 2026, starting with U.S. English on Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhones and iPads, with availability varying by device, language and region — so non-US users and owners of older devices wait longest. Some real-time metrics additionally require an Apple Watch Series 12 or Ultra 4. Beta testers at least keep their data, which stays available in Settings.

Next stop: the iOS 27.3 betas

9to5Mac expects the app to resurface with an iOS 27.3 beta in late October or early November, and says the October arrival for everyone that was previously planned is now off the table. iOS 27.2 itself is still expected later this month, with the monochrome Apple Music icon along for the ride — though whether that icon survives to the final release remains an open question.
