Apple has told customers in Japan and South Korea that the iPhone Duo, along with the iPhone 18 Pro Max, will be available at Apple Stores for a limited time only to buyers holding a pickup reservation, according to notices on its localized websites in the two countries, as reported by MacRumors. Walk-in purchases will not be offered during the early launch period. The notices do not say how long the restriction will last.
The Duo, Apple's first foldable iPhone, was unveiled on September 9, 2026. Pre-orders opened October 16, with retail availability starting Friday, October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions, including the United States, Japan, South Korea, China, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, India and Singapore, and 28 more markets from October 30. It comes in Star White and Night Sky, starting at $1,999 for 256GB.
Orders opened at 5 a.m. Pacific Time on October 16, and delivery dates slipped from October 23 to November within minutes. By about 5:30 a.m., every configuration on the US online store showed an estimated ship date of January 25, 2027, with some buyers seeing January 29. Apple later described demand as extraordinary. In effect the phone is sold out online through the holiday season, with new orders arriving well after Christmas.
Apple has also instructed some retail employees to discourage customers without pre-orders from showing up on launch day. MacRumors cited store staff saying there will likely be no stock for walk-in buyers on October 23, while 9to5Mac reported that some stores may receive no shipments beyond pre-ordered units. Apple's website advises shoppers to check back October 24 for pickup availability. Carrier stores and retail partners, which hold separate allocations, remain a possible alternative.
Behind the shortage is a difficult ramp-up. Citing a Foxconn supply-chain source via China's Jiemian News, multiple outlets report final-assembly yield for the Duo stood only slightly above 60 percent in mid-September, far below the 90 percent-plus Apple expects from a mature line, meaning roughly four in ten units needed rework or were scrapped. Reports point to the hinge, with more than 100 parts, and foldable display panels as bottlenecks. Analyst Jeff Pu has cut his 2026 shipment forecast from 7 million to 6 million units.
An EU energy label Apple published October 18 puts the Duo's total battery capacity at 4,883 mAh, split across two cells of 2,962 mAh and 1,921 mAh, matching an earlier leak. Because the Duo is eSIM-only with no physical SIM tray, the figure applies worldwide. It sits between the eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro at 4,288 mAh and the 18 Pro Max at 5,567 mAh. Apple rates video playback at 44 hours on the cover display and 31 hours on the inner display.
The 256GB model costs $1,999, the 512GB model $2,199, 1TB at $2,599, and the top 2TB configuration at $3,199 — the most expensive starting price Apple has ever set for a mainstream iPhone. Replacing the inner display without AppleCare+ reportedly costs $999, roughly half the phone itself. Some markets have also limited purchases to two units per person to deter scalpers.
For shoppers, the options are to track the delivery date on an existing pre-order, join the online queue and wait until 2027, check store pickup stock from October 24, or try carriers and authorized retailers with independent inventory. Some pre-order customers have already seen delivery dates move earlier as Apple tunes equipment and processes. Whether meaningful supply returns before the holidays depends on how fast assembly yields climb.
