Unboxings First, Verdicts Next: Apple's Foldable iPhone Duo Has Arrived
Three days before launch, the first iPhone Duo unboxing video slipped out. MacRumors reported on October 20 that YouTube channel Kingmi Mobile posted roughly two minutes of footage billed as the world's first unboxing, covering both Star White and Night Sky finishes, one a 1TB unit. Phandroid and iPhone in Canada noted that nobody who ordered through Apple should have a unit yet, since sales begin Friday, October 23, so how the channel obtained the phone is unclear. Notebookcheck and Eastern Herald added that the phone ships unfolded and flat, in Apple's usual minimalist box with only a USB-C cable inside.
Apple's official line is that this is the biggest iPhone redesign in nearly two decades and its first foldable. MacRumors, 9to5Mac, and USA Today agree on U.S. pricing: $1,999 for 256GB, $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB, and $3,199 for 2TB. Pre-orders opened at 5 a.m. Pacific on October 16, with launch in more than 70 countries and regions on October 23 and 28 more markets on October 30. The UK starts at £1,999 and India at INR 299,900. Apple warns that orders placed now will not arrive until late January, a sign of strong early demand.
The context is leadership. John Ternus succeeded Tim Cook as Apple CEO on September 1 after Cook's 15-year tenure, and the September 9 event was his first major product launch. Ternus told TIME that rival first-generation foldables felt cheap and crappy. Nothing CEO Carl Pei fired back on YouTube that the Duo is a waste of money: $2,000, fewer features than an iPhone Pro, no telephoto, no Face ID. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, cited by Mashable, reports Face ID and a telephoto camera may not return until a third-generation model.
The October 21 reviews split between admiration and caution. Engadget's review, titled "A First-Class Foldable," gave 8.8 out of 10, praising the design, performance, battery life, nanotextured inner display, IP68 rating, and cameras, while flagging weight, price, unoptimized apps, and only two rear cameras. Wired called the crease hardly visible thanks to the matte nanotexture stack. CNET's hands-on found the crease even less visible than on the Galaxy Z Fold 8. The Verge countered that it is Apple's messiest first-generation product in years, with a smaller main sensor than the iPhone 18 Pro, on par with the iPhone Air, leaning on heavy sharpening. Gizmodo logged 5.5 to 7.5 hours of screen-on time over seven days and survived an accidental drop down wet steps with only frame scuffs.
The numbers now converge: a 5.4-inch outer OLED at 1,398 x 2,034 and a 7.6-inch inner panel at 1,878 x 2,670, both Super Retina XDR OLED with 120Hz ProMotion and up to 3,000 nits peak brightness. The A20 Pro chip pairs with 12GB of RAM. Rear cameras are dual 48MP main plus ultrawide, with no telephoto. Touch ID sits in the side button; there is no Face ID and no Action Button. The titanium frame and hinge of more than 100 parts weighs 254 grams (8.96 ounces), 11.3 mm thick folded and 5.2 mm open. The dual-cell 4,883mAh battery is rated for up to 24 hours of typical use, 44 hours of video on the outer display and 31 hours on the inner, or 26 hours of straight inner-screen streaming. Charging hits 50 percent in about 15 to 20 minutes on a 60-watt charger; CNET measured 0 to 82 percent in 30 minutes. The phone is eSIM-only with Dual eSIM and IP68 dust and water resistance.
CNN called it Apple's coolest phone in years with just one problem: at $2,000 it costs as much as the latest 14-inch MacBook Pro. PCMag noted the passport-shaped design runs at most two apps side by side, fewer than the Z Fold 8's three-plus picture-in-picture. TechRadar liked the tent-mode Standby display. Developers are now updating apps for the 1:1.4 aspect ratio; Netflix and Apple TV already adapt to cut black bars, while Gmail and LinkedIn still stretch or float, per TechRadar and CNET.
The immediate test is retail day: October 23 brings the launch and the second wave of 28 markets follows on October 30, and the pace of third-party optimization will decide how fast this device grows up. In China, completed pre-order listings on the Dewu app reached 39,999 yuan against a 15,999 yuan official base, with some sellers asking 59,999 yuan. If Friday sales hold and apps catch up, Apple will have taken foldables mainstream; if not, the Duo stays an early-adopter special.
