OpenAI Brings Its AI Models to Google Cloud, Expanding Beyond Microsoft
OpenAI announced that its frontier artificial intelligence models and Codex coding agent will be available to enterprise customers through Google Cloud's Model Garden and Marketplace. Customers can buy the models on Google Cloud Marketplace and apply existing cloud spending commitments toward the purchases. The initial OpenAI models on Google Cloud will be GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol, and GPT-6 Luna, now in private preview to select enterprise customers, with general availability planned in the coming weeks.
Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian has told Reuters in a previous interview that the Google cloud platform is an open platform and welcomes any model popular with developers. OpenAI said in a blog post that Google Cloud's longstanding investment in machine learning and AI has made it a destination for AI workloads and the developers and data scientists building them. Both companies frame the partnership as part of OpenAI's enterprise push to sell its models to more enterprise customers.
The deal follows the April expiry of Microsoft's exclusive distribution arrangement with OpenAI, Reuters reported. OpenAI has since expanded to AWS — building on a $38 billion cloud commitment disclosed in November 2025, with Amazon pledging about $50 billion more roughly three months later, per Quartz — and now to Google Cloud. With this partnership, OpenAI's models are available across all three major U.S. cloud providers.
Several outlets note that major cloud providers are becoming key distributors of top AI models. TechEchelon reported that Google Cloud's annualized revenue growth in the segment reached approximately 82% in the second quarter, up from 63% in the first quarter, driven partly by demand for AI models and custom chips. By comparison, Amazon and Microsoft posted second-quarter cloud growth of 37% and 42%, respectively. Google also promised that prompts, context, and outputs stay inside the customer's data perimeter and are not used to train foundation models; OpenAI models run on dedicated Google Cloud infrastructure with isolated gateways, while zero data retention and confidential compute are listed as coming soon.
Microsoft remains OpenAI's primary cloud partner, according to the reporting. Google and OpenAI previously partnered last year, when the AI lab said it was using Google's cloud to run ChatGPT and its application programming interface. This deeper tie between two rivals underscores Google Cloud's strategy of offering customers a broader choice of models rather than relying only on its own, after it struck a cloud deal with OpenAI to offer it more computing capacity last year.
General availability and additional security options remain forthcoming. Enterprises can purchase through Google Cloud Marketplace on a single invoice, with usage counting toward Google's Flexible Savings Plans. OpenAI said customers can also connect local Codex CLI and desktop workflows directly to the Gemini platform for inference.
